James L.(Jim) Benepe Jr., 82, of Sheridan died Wednesday, December 23, 2009, at his residence.
Jim was born November 3, 1927, in St. Paul, MN to James and Gladys (Bond) Benepe Sr. He graduated high school in 1945, served in the Navy V-5 Program from 1945-1948 in Dickinson, ND, graduated from Macalester College, St. Paul MN in 1952, and Washington University Medical School, St. Louis MO in 1956.
During his medical residency at the V.A. Medical Hospital in St. Paul, he met and later married Sheila Hanson, in 1957, they divorced in 1976. He established his lifelong career in the V.A. Hospital system with a brief stay in Palo Alto, CA before settling in Sheridan in 1959 and remaining in Sheridan except for six years in Northampton, MA from 1967-1973. His titles while in Sheridan were Psychologist, Chief of Staff, Director and Chief of Psychiatry until his retirement in 1987. He was also active in and retired a Full Colonel in the Army Reserve.
He married Mary (Johnson) Amundson in 1989.
His passions in life were golf–winning various Club Championships, bird hunting, big game hunting, and all kinds of fishing. He also enjoyed telling jokes, cooking a good meal, a glass of wine, classical music, and the occasional poker game.
He was preceded in death by a brother Dick in 2000. Survivors include his wife Mary, sons Jim (Barbara) Benepe III - Sheridan and Mark Benepe-Portland OR, a brother Tom, sisters Barbara and Portia and granddaughter Amanda.
Funeral services are at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with Father Kevin Jones officiating. A reception will immediately follow at the Sheridan Country Club. Cremation has taken place.
