Well known area rancher, J. Vernon States, 95, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2009 at Westview Health Care Center.
Vernon was born in Logan, KS, on .January 26, 1914, to Perry and Maud (Lappin) States, and moved to Sheridan in 1934. He married Oriel A. Lupton on March 14, 1935, in Sheridan.
During his long life he worked many jobs, including sheep herder, cow puncher, coal miner, M.D.U. employee in both Sheridan and Buffalo, and for the Bureau of Reclamation in Oregon on a W.P.A. project. He is best remembered by his family and many devoted friends as a rancher. He was fortunate to be doing what he loved, working at the ranch on Dutch Creek, just a few days before he died.
Vernon was a member of various local organizations including the Elks and Masonic Lodge, as well as recently volunteering to deliver Meals on Wheels. In earlier years he was very active in Farm Bureau, holding offices at both the county and state level. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
Vernon was preceded in death in 2004 by his bride of 69 years, Oriel, his parents and siblings Lynn, Melvin and Mildred. He is survived by two sons and their spouses, Dean of Sheridan and Duane of Sandy, Utah, ten grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, at Kane Funeral Home with Past Master Al Badgett, Big Horn Lodge #43 officiating. Interment will follow at the Big Horn Lodge #43 Section of the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.
A visitation will held from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Monday, August 31 at Kane Funeral Home.
