She was born in Culmstock, Devon, England on July 6, 1926 to Leonard and Olive Nethercott. She married Alvin Oster and came to the U.S. as a war bride on the USS Washington and settled in North Dakota where they owned and operated a dairy and cattle farm. They had six children. Irene worked at the Saint Alexis Hospital in Bismarck, ND. Irene moved to Buffalo, WY in 1978 and worked at the Amie Holt Care Center until her marriage to Jason L. Stearns on October 17, 1981. She then moved to Waupun Wisconsin where she cared for her mother-in-law, Jane Stearns, for many years until her death. She returned to WY in 2006 due to ill health and was cared for by her loving family. In 2007 her husband Janon passed away after caring for him for 10 years. The same year she was still strong enough to travel with her two daughters back to her beloved England, where once again she revisited her birthplace and reacquainted with family and friends. She also traveled to Scotland to visit her sister, Audrey and her extended family. In May of 2008 she moved to the Pioneer Manor Care Center where she truly enjoyed living and participating in the activities including pulling pranks on the staff. She was greatly loved and will be missed by family, friends and staff of the Manor. A blessing received of her family was the last three days of her life when the staff and residents came in to share what mom meant to them and the impact she had on their lives.
Her hobbies were reading, gardening, listening to classical music, being involved with 4-H as a leader, knitting, ceramics and enjoying her bowling league. She was a compassionate and caring person, she enjoyed visiting with her friends and family and she never met a stranger. She enjoyed long walks with her neighbor, Connie as she walked her faithful Samoyed dog, Tiffany; she loved entertaining her neighbors and friends and also enjoyed the theater and traveling. This past summer for her 84th birthday she went flying and loved every minute of it!
She was preceded in death by her parents; both spouses; her brother Raymond and her son-in-law, Brad Brose. She is survived by her brother Kenneth (Betty) Nethercott of Surrey, England; sister Audrey Daschofsky of Inverness, Scotland; her children Carolyn (Charles) Freier of Cheyenne; Terry Oster of Fort Pierre, South Dakota; Randy Oster of Denver, Colorado; Patricia Brose of Gillette; Kathy (Tim) Stafford of Gillette; Robyn (Tom) Taylor of Buffalo; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
