George (Scotty) Schuman, 96, of Sheridan, passed away on August 2, 2009, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 5, 2009 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm at Kane Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 2:00 pm at the Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Born on October 5, 1912 in Fromberg, Montana to George and Elizabeth (Neibauer) Schuman, George attended school through the 5th grade, and later worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad shops in Laurel, Montana. In 1934, he wed Mollie Michael in Billings, Montana. Four years later, they moved to the Leiter / Clearmont area and remained there for the next 35 years, farming and ranching. George was able to purchase the ranch he was working on in 1949, and lived there until his retirement in 1972. As a steward of the land, he believed in and practiced conservation. After retirement, George and Mollie moved to Story and later to Sheridan, where he resided until his death.
George served for a number of years on the Sheridan County Weed and Pest and the Sheridan County Conservation Districts. He was also a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church for 60 years.
He was preceded in death by his wife, brothers Phillip, Sam and William, sisters Mary Michael and Molly Reiter, and daughter-in-laws Mabel Schuman and Melva Schuman.
Survivors include sons Don, George (Doris), Les (Shirley) and Gerald (Joann), and daughter Phyllis (Gary) Foss, along with grandchildren George Allan, Scot, Brad, Michael, William, Leslie and Valerie Schuman, Paula Jung, Susan Keahey, Michelle Jones, Kara Brutsman, Kristie Long, Melanie Van Wagner, Monica and Gary Foss and step-grandson Paul Slayter; 24 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
