Edith Gilbertson, 100, of Buffalo, Wyoming, formerly of Cogswell and Forman, North Dakota, died Thursday, December 27, 2012 in her home with family beside her.
Josephine Edith Zuber was born to Joseph Anton and Marian Ellen (Rackham) Zuber on November 4, 1912 in rural Drake, North Dakota. She was the second oldest of their nine children. She grew up and attended school at Cogswell and graduated from Cogswell High School. Edith lived with and worked as caregiver for George and Ada Broeker as she attended school. She grew up a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Cogswell.
Edith married Edwin Gilbertson on February 3, 1936 at Britton, South Dakota. They farmed west of Cogswell and reared their seven children in Nazareth Lutheran Church. Edith was an active member of the Ladies Aid and the Homemakers Club in the community. She crocheted beautiful bowls, doilies and gifts for family, friends, and teachers. Edith loved to garden. She grew them large enough to feed the family all year with her canning. She raised chickens, geese, sheep, hogs, and calves. She worked summers at the Oakes Nursery and June Grass Fields of Cogswell. She was a cook at Sargent Manor of Forman for seventeen years. She also provided a home for her two youngest brothers Joseph “Jay” and David. In 2003, she moved to Buffalo, WY to be near her daughter, Myrna.
Grateful for having shared her life, she is survived by her children: Loell, Longbeach, WA; Diane Schneider, Upland, CA; Sydney (Bob) Hanson, Battle Lake, MN; Corwin (Jan) Yakima, WA; Myrna (Dennis) Baasch, Buffalo, WY; Marilyn (Ray) Droney, Youngstown, OH. sister, Janice Fairbanks, Port Orchard, WA; brother, David (Joyce) Zuber, Centralia, WA; sister-in-law, Delores Zuber, Riverton, WY. She has 18 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers, two sisters, her daughter, Leota Rae, two son-in-laws, and one daughter-in-law.
A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2013 at Sargent Cemetery, Cogswell, ND. Pastor Trichelle Kirchenwitz of Trinity Lutheran Church of Forman, ND presiding. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home of Sheridan, Wyoming.
