A Change of Plea hearing was held Thursday morning for a Sheridan man in Fourth Judicial District Court. Sheridan Media's Ron Richter was there.
Per terms of a plea agreement with the State, 20-year-old Edwin Badgett pled “Guilty” to an amended charge of Felony Sexual Abuse of a Minor in the 3rd Degree. Badgett was originally charged with Sexual Abuse of a Minor in the 2nd Degree in December of 2011 for sexual contact with a female individual between the ages of 13 and 15. He was 19 years of age when he committed the crime.
In March of this year, Badgett fled authorities when they attempted to arrest him on a warrant for the sexual abuse charge. He still faces four misdemeanor charges in Sheridan County Circuit Court as a result of the fleeing incident earlier this year. Along with the amended charge, the plea agreement with the State recommends a 3 to 7 year prison sentence to be suspended in lieu of a split-sentence and 5 years of supervised probation. The State also recommended that the misdemeanor charges in Circuit Court run concurrent to the sentence of the felony sexual abuse charge and that Badgett be released on an unsecured bond.
District Court Judge John Fenn accepted the guilty plea and ordered a pre-sentence investigation be conducted prior to sentencing, which is set for January 10th at 10:30 am. Fenn also agreed to release Badgett on a $50,000 unsecured bond and reminded him that the Court is by no means bound to the terms of the plea agreement with the State and could reject it at sentencing.
