‘We the People’ inviting community to Constitution Day Celebration

Free and open to the public, the Constitution Day Celebration will feature members of the Sheridan High School “We the People” program at the WYO Theater on Sept. 14, from 7 – 8:30 p.m.    

Constitution Day is Friday, Sept. 17. The day was chosen, according to the National Constitution Center, because it is the day of the year the Founding Fathers signed the most influential document in American history, the U.S. Constitution.  

According to the sponsors of the program, the Center for Civic Education, We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution National Finals is a yearly competition involving high school students from throughout the United States. The national finals simulates a congressional hearing and is held at the National Conference Center in Leesburg, Virginia, and in congressional hearing rooms on Capitol Hill. 

To prepare for the competition, classes learn about government and study the Constitution and Bill of Rights. According to SHS Government instructor Mike Thomas, the SHS We the People team has won the statewide championship eight times since 2009, including 2020 and 2021. 

President of the National Society of Colonial Dames in Wyoming – one of the key sponsors of the event on Sept. 14,- Isabel Wallop, told listeners of Sheridan Media’s Public Pulse program why the We the People program is so important to tomorrow’s leaders.

The event is also sponsored by Daughters of the American Revolution and the President Alexander Slidell McKenzie Chapter USD War of 1812.
