Help Make this a Reality

Midway through Fire Prevention Week, October 7 through October 13, 2012, as we learn and work on ways to prevent fires it is perhaps fitting to pause and remember two Sheridan Firefighters, Edward N. Green (1940 -2007) and Fred W. Tossie (1887-1929). Sheridan Firefighter's Local 276 is working to incorporate these two individuals and other events described below around a larger than life size statue to be located as shown in this photo representation. About $28,000 is needed to start the full sized sculpture by local artist Jerry Smiley. To "kick start" the fund raising drive $50 raffle tickets are going on sale. After 100 tickets are sold there will be a drawing for the #1 maquette (the sculptor's preliminary model). Tickets are currently available at Sheridan Stationary, Red Velvet and the Fire Department Office - with additional locations coming. For additional information call Statue Committee Chairman Greg Luhman @ 751-8588. For more on Fire Prevention Week see: http://www.sheridanwy.net/fire-p...

Alongside the statue of Ed Green, a plaque will honor former Chief Fred Tossie who died from injuries he sustained while fighting a fire Jan. 22, 1929. To this day he remains the department’s only line of duty death.

Adding to the memorial are these two steel artifacts that were salvaged from the wreckage of the World Trade Center following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. This portion of the project is a joint venture between Sheridan College and the firefighters. Sheridan Fire-Rescue Shift C Captain Greg Luhman said, "The memorial will tie the significance of the national tragedy to the community and serve as a daily reminder of sacrifices made by those in emergency services."
