Federal school lunch regulations going into effect this fall may leave some Sheridan County School District #1 students with growling stomachs.
As a part of a nationwide campaign targeted to get childhood obesity under control, well-meaning federal regulations now severely restrict the amount of calories that can be served in a federally reimbursable meal. District business manager, Jeremy Smith, said the new Department of Agriculture regulations were designed for inner-city kids, who have a much different lifestyle than students of his district.
District #1 has sent letters home to parents explaining the new lunch program to give parents a chance to send extra food to school, especially with their student athletes. Families who depend on the school lunch program for free or reduced meals may not have other ways to access more food. Smith says the district is committed to working around this problem.
The school is also piloting an after-school snack program to help bridge the gap between lunch and dinner for students.
