Update: Power restored after 3-hour outage Wednesday morning in Sheridan

Two downed Montana-Dakota Utilities substations left parts of Sheridan without power Wednesday morning for a period of about three hours. Mark Hanson, spokesman for MDU.

Hanson says that they don't know why the equipment failed.

The Children's Center on Highland Avenue was evacuated into the old Highland Park school after the outage caused problems with the heating system in the center, emitting an odor and prompting the evacuation. No one was hurt, but the center was closed for the. The Children's Center will reopen Thursday.

The outage hit Sheridan High School, Sagebrush Elementary, Highland Park Elementary, and Meadowlark Elementary schools. A release from School District 2 Superintendent Craig Dougherty stated that the schools backup systems allowed classes to resume normally. "Administration is in communication with the principals and the schools are running smoothly," the release said.

Sheridan Memorial Hospital was also without power.

Original reports-----------------------------------------

Two downed substations have put about 3,000 customers without power in Sheridan County, according to Mark Hanson with Montana-Dakota Utilities.

Hanson said they expect to have power restored by about 10:30 or 11 am.

The power outage began at about 8:30 this morning, Hanson said, after a safety feature breaker switched off sending a problem signal on the transmission line and shutting down the substations. What tripped the breaker is not known at this time.

Concerning the evacuation of the Children's Center, Hanson said the outage caused the furnace at the center to switch off, creating an odor at which time the center was evacuated.

Because of the power outage today, Sheridan Memorial Hospital will not be able to serve lunch to people not staying in the hospital.

We will have more for you as it comes in.

Children's Center evacuated, parents asked to pick up children at old Highland Park school

The Children's Center at 863 Highland Avenue in Sheridan has been evacuated into the old Highland Park School/current Meadowlark School across the street and parents are asked to come pick up their children there if they can. Infants and toddlers were evacuated and all are safe and accounted for, according to Sarah Ferber with the Children's Center.

Emergency personnel are at the Children's Center and are scanning the building, but a reason for the evacuation or the search is not known at this time.

The children are safe, Ferber reiterated, but they don't have diapers or formula for the children so parents are asked to come if they can because they don't know when they will be able to move back to the center. The Old Highland Park School/current Meadowlark school is located across the street from the Children's Center at 1301 Avon Street.

Parents with questions can call Ferber at 751-3600. The Children's Center will be closed for the remainder of the day.
