COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Wyoming forward Kayla Woodward has earned Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors for games played from Jan. 16-22, 2012. It is the first weekly award in her collegiate career.
Woodward, a 5-11 freshman from Sheridan, Wyo., led the Cowgirls to a 1-1 record and a share of fourth place in the Conference standings. She averaged 25.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 3.0 assists per game last week as Wyoming beat Air Force, 98-36, and lost to Colorado State on the road, 62-58. For the week, she shot 76.9 percent (20-26) from the field, including 87.5 percent (7-8) from long range, and was a perfect 4-4 from the free throw line.
Against Air Force, she finished with a career-high 28 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and three assists in just 25 minutes of action. It was the second double-double of her career. With the Cowgirls up 15-4, she scored the next nine points for Wyoming, extending the lead to 24-12 and scored the last 10 points of the first half to give UW a 51-18 halftime lead.
In the Border War game at CSU on Saturday, Woodward recorded her second straight 20-point game with 23 points and six rebounds in 40 minutes of play. With CSU up 15-9 with 11:42 in the first half, she scored the next 10 Cowgirl points to even the score at 19, and another basket after CSU had retaken the lead to tie at 21. In the second half Wyoming was down by nine, 53-44, but Woodward cut the Rams lead to four by scoring five on the next seven UW points, 55-51.
