Sheridan author Craig Johnson, who has penned six Walt Longmire mysteries and has a seventh coming out next June, officially received word that a major television network has given the green light to a pilot series based on his books. Mary Jo Johnson has the story.

His books have received numerous national and international awards and critical acclaim. And now this down-to-earth, self-deprecating “guy from Ucross – population 25” will have his work possibly seen on a series called “Longmire,” to air on the cable network A & E. I sat down with Craig after he read his annual Christmas story at the Fulmer Library Friday morning.

Craig says he never really “optioned” his work. He explains.

Those “real go-ers” include executive producers and directors of such various hit television series like “House,” “The Closer,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Trust Me,” “NYPD Blue,” “Deadwood,” “Six Feet Under,” “True Blood,” and “Big Love.”

He tells us how they were introduced to his work.

Along with the production team falling into place, he says, another thing the potential project has going for it is that there are not too many westerns on television right now.

Tomorrow, Craig will discuss that issue a bit more, as well as tell us about where the pilot is to be filmed, and how he has been involved more than is usual for a book's writer once rights have been bought.

For sheridanmedia.com news, I'm Mary Jo Johnson reporting.
