School District 1 June Report

District 1 Superintendent Sue Belish

All trustees were in attendance at last night's Sheridan County School District 1 board meeting in Ranchester.

Action taken included approval of Zack Cummings to replace Mick Johnson to the Sheridan County School District 1 Recreation District board. Johnson's 9-year term expires this summer.

The board approved contributing $2,500 to the DARE Program for the 2010-2011 school year.

County to Go Smoke-Free

Sheridan County to go smokefree starting July 1st.

At Tuesday's Sheridan County Commission meeting, commissioners formally adopted a Smoke-Free policy that will go into effect for all County buildings, vehicles and equipment. It will not, however, include smokeless tobacco. Commissioner Bob Rolston says.

Tandem Productions will kick off its 16th season of children's summer theater tonight with their production of Music Man Jr. at the WYO Theater. The Music Man is an American musical classic tale that follows salesman Harold Hill on his journey to River City, Iowa, where he meets and falls in love with Librarian Marian Paroo.

City Council Approves $29.2 Million Budget

The Sheridan City Council held a special meeting Tuesday night to adopt the budget for fiscal year 2010-2011. Balancing the $29.2 million budget was no easy task, as declining revenues made for a $1.3 million dollar budget shortfall that prompted voluntary employee buyouts and additional cuts across the board. The annual Sheridan Media Benefit Golf Tournament is held in conjunction with Celebrate the Arts every year, and the proceeds of the event help provide public art throughout Sheridan.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday for the National Center for Atmospheric Research Supercomputing Center to be built in Cheyenne. The Center will provide advanced computing services to scientists around the nation and world. Governor Dave Freudenthal says that persistence paid off in the end.

Household Hazardous Waste Day

Household hazardous waste can be turned in Saturday, June 19th from 8 am to 2 pm at the City Recycling Center.

The City of Sheridan Recycling Center will be holding a Household Hazardous Waste Day this Saturday, June 19th. Center director Charles Martineau explains.

Items that folks can turn in include pesticides, fertilizers, various types of household cleaners and paint, to name a few.

Eleven Appear in Court on MIP Charges

Friday June 4th, Deputies with the Sheridan County Sheriff's Office made multiple arrests at a shop party on Bowie Road in Sheridan. The bulk of the citations that were given out were for Minor in Possession, as 24 minors were cited. Eleven of those minors appeared in Circuit Court before Judge Sampson Monday afternoon, with all of them pleading guilty to their charge.
