The 2009 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System shows that just over 9% of Wyoming adults use smokeless tobacco. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this means that Wyoming holds the dubious distinction of leading the nation in smokeless tobacco use.

Sheridan County Tobacco Prevention Specialist Shelly Araas says the data cannot be ignored.

Wyoming also ranks 1st for the percentage of men who both smoke and use smokeless tobacco at 23%, which almost doubles the national average. Araas points out a very harmful decision that some people make when they are trying to quit smoking.
