CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The Wyoming Democratic State Convention kicking off in Casper promises to be a relatively somber affair. Few Democrats are running for statewide office and even some of the longtime party faithful say they're puzzled about why.

The convention starts today in Casper and continues through the weekend. A couple of relative unknowns have said they intend to run for governor as Democrats, but none has mounted a statewide campaign yet. Democratic Party officials say they don't expect any of the declared candidates to address the convention.

The Democratic Party has been foundering since Governor Dave Freudenthal announced in March that he wouldn't seek a third term. The Democrat has been the pillar of the party's political strength in Wyoming during his eight years in office.
