In Wyoming, 2016 was marked by a weakening economy linked to the downturn in the state’s energy production industries. Despite these struggles, the Wyoming Lottery Corporation experience a record-setting year of sales. With the launch of a new game, the early payoff of the corporation’s start-up loan, and the transfer of more than two million dollars to the state, 2016 represented a year of growth and advancement for WyoLotto.
On January 12, 2016 Powerball broke records with a $1.6 billion jackpot that sent Wyoming ticket sales skyrocketing. Although the Wyoming Legislature approved the creation of Lottery, it was left to the Wyoming Lottery Corporation’s Board of Directors and CEO to secure a $2.6 million start-up loan to fund the venture. Last year the corporation paid off the loan much earlier than anticipated, allowing WyoLotto to begin revenue transfers to the state ahead of schedule.
In February, the Cowboy Draw jackpot increased to more than $1.8 million before a first-time Cowboy Draw player purchased a jackpot-winning ticket at the Flying J in Cheyenne. This amount holds the record for the game’s highest jackpot to date.
Following January’s early loan payoff, WyoLotto made its first revenue transfer to the Wyoming State Treasurer’s Office totalling $1.2 million. The payoff and subsequent revenue transfer were largely attributed to record-breaking Powerball and Cowboy Draw jackpots that dramatically increased ticket sales. In April, WyoLotto gave back more than $2.8 million to the state.
At the beginning of autumn, WyoLotto announced that Lucky for Life would be joining its portfolio to draw games. This was accompanied by the launch of the Ride of a Lifetime giveaway which awarded a 2016 Camaro, 2016 Harley Davidson Freewheeler, and $3,000.00 cash to the giveaway winner.
On December 5, 2016, Lucky for Life was officially launched in Wyoming, giving players the chance to win $1,000.00 a day for life, a jackpot completely unique in WyoLotto’s game offerings. They also announced the Trip of a Lifetime giveaway, which will send a winner and their guests on a trip to Ireland in 2017.
