CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The state agency that oversees oil and gas drilling in Wyoming has published proposed new rules that would require companies to test groundwater for pollution before they drill.

The Wyoming Oil and Gas Conservation Commission published the draft rules on its website Friday and will take public comment on them until Oct. 7.

Under the rules, any company seeking a permit to drill would need to submit a groundwater testing plan. The plan would need to cover testing the water in water wells located within a half-mile of the new oil or gas well. The purpose is to document whether the groundwater is polluted before drilling begins.

Environmentalists support baseline groundwater testing. They say such testing will help to determine if oil and gas drilling ever causes groundwater pollution.
