Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone has developed a reputation for being a stellar place to view elk during the fall. Yellowstone Public Affairs Officer Al Nash says that they are “glad people are excited and come to the park to see wildlife.” However, you should also remember to watch out when watching elk, especially this time of year:

He adds that a good rule of thumb is to stay around 25 yards, or about 5 car lengths, away from big animals like elk:

Al says that if an elk does charge you, get in your car or behind somebody else's car and “give yourself some distance.”
