Terry Wall and Scott Duncan with Volunteers of America, who provides juvenile detention services to Johnson County, gave a quarterly update to the Johnson County Commissioners at their last meeting.
Terry Wall discussed the possibility of adding new programs to the contract.
The first program, called the ACE program, involves students who are temporarily housed in the Milestones facility. Other counties have agreements with local school districts so youth can get maintain their schoolwork and not fall behind the rest of their class. Johnson County currently has no agreement for this program, and VOA would like to implement one. Wall will be discussing the issue with the Johnson County School District.
Second is a “Thinking For A Change” group which will teach young people how to change their lives and not end up back in the detention system in the future. The program is used in other VOA youth and adult programs elsewhere and are very successful, Wall said.
He explains more about proposed changes to the contract.
The renewal of and possible changes to the contract will be negotiated in the next couple of months.
