Veterans Affairs hospitals across the country are striving to become leaders in the medical field, and the Sheridan facility is no exception. Nurse Practitioner at the VA, Colleen Butler, says there are a lot of misconceptions about what the Sheridan VA is all about.
And, even if veterans recognize the Sheridan VA as a primary care medical hospital, there's one group in particular that doesn't take advantage of the services available to them. Butler, who heads the Sheridan VA's Women's Clinic, said it's been a struggle to recruit patients.
The Sheridan VA works closely with Sheridan Memorial Hospital to provide female-oriented medical care, including mammograms or prenatal care. Furthermore, the new concept of a women's program within the VA has put a new emphasis on patient privacy. Today's female patients going in for an annual exam don't even have to wait in the same area as male patients. Butler said the VA Women's Clinic is equipped to provide generalized medical care to women in all life stages.
The VA Women's Clinic has scheduled an open house later this month. Sheridan Media News will have more information as the event approaches.
