A 30-year-old Utah man was killed in a wreck on Interstate 80 about a mile east of Cheyenne Monday morning. James C. Castleman, of South Ogden, died at the scene of the accident when his 2007 Freightliner tractor trailer went over the median, rolled over and slid into westbound lanes.
In a media release, Sgt. Stephen Townsend with the Wyoming Highway Patrol said Castleman was headed east on I-80, pulling double van-type semitrailers for FedEx. Castleman's combination went off the roadway and into the median in a slight right hand curve where it went through a barbed wire fence.
The entire tractor trailer combination overturned in
the median and slid into the westbound lanes of travel. Sgt. Townsend said Castleman's combination came to rest in - and blocked - the westbound lanes. Castleman was partially ejected from the cabin during the rollover and was pinned in the wreckage.
Authorities say based on evidence gathered at the scene, Castleman attempted to bring his vehicle to a stop and steer back towards the road just prior to the fatal rollover.
The co-driver, 35-year-old Tracy Sherrod of Clinton, Utah, was in the sleeper berth at the time of the crash. Sherrod was transported to the Cheyenne Regional Medical Center.
