US Highway 14 Is Now Open After Haz-Mat Spill

US Highway 14 through Shell Canyon is now reopen after being closed since Friday night. The closure was due to a tractor trailer rollover spilling an estimated 1,300 gallons of a silicon based hazardous chemical liquid.

The driver of the tractor was 44 year-old Donald Slayton from Kentucky. Slayton told Troopers that he noticed that his brakes were smoking from overheating as he was heading down a steep down grade. While trying to shift his tractor to a slower gear, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a guardrail before rolling and spilling the hazardous material. Slayton was released from Midway Clinic in Basin after being treated for minor injuries.
