The Wyoming Department of Transportation has announced they will be re-opening U.S. 14A - a stretch of road west of Burgess Junction - early next week. Public Information Specialist for WYDOT, Ronda Holwell, explains.
Holwell says the mountain road usually closes every fall at the end of hunting season. The annual winter closure of the road occurs at milepost 76 on the Lovell side of the Big Horn Mountains, and east of milepost 98 east of Burgess Junction.
During the recent spring plowing of U.S. 14A, WYDOT crews encountered two-to-four feet of snow, including drifts up to eight feet deep. Holwell says in the meantime, crews have a few rocks to remove from the roadway, a guardrail to repair and some equipment to move. Again, U.S. 14A will open for the summer at noon on Monday, May 20.
