University Of Wyoming Will Ask Legislators To Maintain Their Funding In The Upcoming Budget Session

More Wyoming students than ever are choosing local community colleges and the University of Wyoming to further their education. U-W in Laramie realized a 4% increase in students this fall and that is one of the largest increases in a number of years. University of Wyoming President Tom Buchanan was in Sheridan yesterday and he says one factor keeping local students her is the Hathaway Scholarship program.

While the Hathaway program has helped garner more revenue for the University, the school had to make some hard choices when cutting the budget for fiscal 2010. What is the prediction for next year’s budget?

U-W has not raised tuition and fees for Wyoming residents in over 3 years. The Board of Trustees did recently approve a 5% tuition increase for each of the next two years. The University plans to offset the first increase with stimulus funding, so students won’t have to pay the increase until the fall semester in 2011.
