Keeping tobacco and alcohol out of the hands of minors is the goal of the the compliance checks that the Sheridan Police Department conducts periodically throughout the year.

The P.D. just recently finished up a round of tobacco compliance checks and have begun a round of alcohol checks.

Sheridan Police Lieutenant Chris Dahmke says that while most businesses pass with flying colors, there are still a few that fail.

Dahmke explains that it's not like the business owner's don't know that the stings are coming.

Dahmke said that the employee who sells the tobacco or alcohol is cited and has to appear in Municipal Court. Sheridan Police Administrative Services Manager Jenifer Shassetz says that the funding for the compliance checks comes in the form of grant money.

Shassetz said that they receive $8,500 per program annually, and that they typically only use about $6,500 of the grant money.

High School students that participate in the compliance checks and businesses that pass the checks receive gift certificates from local establishments.
