Expansion of Sheridan College's Thorne-Rider Campus Center is coming along ahead of schedule.

Director of Facilities Kent Andersen said painting of the interior is ongoing, and carpets will be installed in the next few weeks, followed by fixtures. Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Cheryl Heath explained the timeline.

Andersen said there will be an opening celebration, probably after school begins in the fall. No date has been set. The expansion doubles the space of the former student commons, from 15,000 to nearly 30,000 square feet. The center will include a new lounge for student veterans, an activity space with a large-screen projector, and offices for student officers and clubs.

Students helped choose the furnishings and other amenities inside the building.

Additions outside the campus center include an amphitheater and, will eventually include an enclosed access to the Griffith Memorial Building. Heath said the area is part of the Whitney Mall, a park-like area that, when completed, will extend to the Whitney Loft Housing.
