Suicide Prevention Week: Operation SAVE Training Tuesday at YMCA

A week promoting suicide awareness will culminate on Sunday with the 2nd annual Out of the Darkness Walk to Prevent Suicide fundraiser on Sunday. Vanessa Hastings, prevention coordinator with the Northern Wyoming Mental Health Center, talks about the week and the walk.

The Operation SAVE training takes place from 5 to 6 pm Tuesday at the Sheridan County YMCA. The training will last one hour and is open to the public. Anyone with questions can call 763-3055.

Last year's Out of the Darkness Walk had 250 walkers and raised about $30,000. Funds go to support suicide research and education in programs in the area and around the country.

Suicide is the leading cause of death for college students nationwide, and is the third leading cause of death for teens and young adults, according to a release from the Northern Wyoming Mental Health Center. An estimated 1 million Americans make a suicide attempt each year, and 30,000 die by suicide in one year. Wyoming ranks in the top five yearly in suicide rates.
