For the past 30 years, on a night near Halloween, screams and shrieks can be heard coming from the Murphy house at 138 Fish Hatchery Road in Story. That's because Glen and Marilyn have hosted a haunted house at their residence since they moved to Story decades ago. Marilyn said their first Halloween celebrations were relatively small.
The Glenn's haunted house is a staple of Halloween tradition for kids and adults alike in Story. Aside from a spooky walk peppered with volunteer neighbors dressed up like ghouls and ghosts, the Glenns hand out candy and soda to their guests. They even tailor some haunted house tours to be less scary for the younger crowd. Marilyn said her role in the haunted house itself is precluded by her occupation.
With age creeping up on them, the Murphys have declared this is the last year they'll be hosting their elaborate event. However, Marilyn said they have had preliminary discussions with a younger family who may be willing to inherit the tradition of hosting the haunted house.
Each year, the decorations and layout of the haunted house is different. This year's final event, "Murphys Madness," will be Saturday night from 6 to 9 o'clock.
