Members of the Yakama Nation made the journey to Sheridan from Washington state to participate in the WYO Rodeo Parade and the First People's Pow Wow. One of the dances performed by the young dancers was the Yakama's swan dance.
Yakama Elder, Patricia Whitefoot, says the girls have visited nursing home facilities to perform the dance they believe has the power to heal and bring happiness. She shares the story behind the dance itself.
Whitefoot says even the girls experience benefits from performing the swan dance by helping one another feel a sense of belonging and show each other support.
