The second annual St. Francis Animal Shelter 4K Paws Walk/Run was held Wednesday night at Buffalo's Washington Park and raised nearly $4,000.

The money from the fundraiser will go toward offsetting expenses for housing and feeding cats and dogs with no home in Johnson County.

The event had 68 participants, some runners and most who walked the roughly 4K course along the Clear Creek Trail System, which is more than last year, according to Penny Loughan with the shelter.

She explains why the funds are so important to the shelter and how people can continue to help.

The 4K Walk/Run took in nearly $1,800 in registration fees and another $2,000 in donations.

Local businesses donated nearly $1,000 in prizes for both human and canine participants.
