Some Say More Info Needed Before More Western Land Opened to Mining

(WYOMING NEWS SERVICE) -- More information is needed before Congress makes decisions in regard to opening up more federal land in Wyoming and other Western states to mining and drilling, two western democratic congressmen say.

Congressman Rual Grijalva of Arizona And Sen. Tom Udall of Colorado both have made requests of the General Accounting Office for numbers on development of federal lands.

Grijalva reminds us that hard-rock mining pays no federal royalties.

Matt Garrington with the Checks and Balances Project says people in Wyoming shouldn't be worried when mining and drilling companies threaten to go to other countries if fees and royalties are too high.

Federal lands throughout the West-mined minerals include copper, oil, gas, coal, phosphate and gold, and will be written into a report from congressmen addressing the issue.
