SJHS: Promoting Learning with In-Depth Curriculum,Teacher Collaboration

Sheridan Junior High School Principal Mitch Craft gave the SJHS yearly presentation to the SCSD2 Board of Trustees Monday night, emphasizing five strategies that define the culture of SJHS, which in turn produce academic results.

Craft says one of those strategies is narrowing curriculum down to the bare essentials.

Craft added another thing that contributes to the success of SJHS and high learning levels of students: teacher collaboration.

SJHS has a goal of improving PAWS for 2012 to above 90% proficient and advanced at all levels; reading, writing and math across the 6th, 7h and 8th grades, with the exception of a goal of attaining 85% math proficiency for the 8th grade.

Focus areas for meeting goals include things like new quarter-length electives, E-instruction clickers for in-class use, and weekly teacher collaboration to implement new research and methods into the learning process.

Among behavior goals at SJHS, Craft told the board how at the junior high they are fine-tuning the Saturday school program to make sure kids are completing missing assignments.
