The Sheridan High School Model United Nations team received four first place and two second place awards at the University of Denver spring conference for high school teams this past weekend. Twenty one SHS students joined 230 other high school students from the Denver Metro area, along with a team from Cody to work on a wide range of issues regarding international importance.
Model UN is an international student organization that helps students gain skills in leadership, oratory, research, diplomacy and cooperation. The team from Sheridan High School has grown from 12 during the last school year to 30 this year.
Best Delegate awardees (first place) from Security Councils working on the conflicts in Myanmar and the Democratic Republic of Congo were Gabe Briggs and Cody Heaps, delegates representing Republic of Korea, and Garrett Syzmd and Zhenka Zhelinska, delegates representing Luxembourg. Outstanding Delegate awardees (second place) from the Advance Security Council were Jacob Jahiel and Heather Belus, representing Brazil. The ASC worked on the historic SC meeting that dealt with the situation in Yalta before WWII.
The team has been supporting itself through fundraisers and support from the Social Studies and Activities Departments. In addition, the team has received community support from the Sheridan Community Education Fund, several individuals and United Methodist Women of First United Methodist Church in Sheridan.
