Kavan Bede of Sheridan achieved a milestone in the Civil Air Patrol Thursday night when he was promoted to second lieutenant and assumed duties as cadet commander in ceremonies at the National Guard Armory.
The 13-year-old son of Lynnet and Jim Bede has been in the Civil Air Patrol since he was 12. His mom said 12 is the youngest at which anyone can join the organization.
Lt. Kristen Marcus, the local Civil Air Patrol's public affairs officer, explained more about the organization.
In that third part, she said, the youth learn about everything from hot-air balloons to rockets. Marcus said Lt. Bede's accomplishment Thursday was a milestone, and Capt. Jeff Baum, who is deputy commander of the squadron in Sheridan, said that's because what Bede has done is something achieved by only 15 percent of cadets nationwide.
Marcus said Bede, who was promoted to his new rank from chief master sergeant, is a very driven individual who promotes every time he can. She said he's also good at pushing the other cadets. She said if Bede decides to go into the Air Force, or any other branch of the military, after he graduates, he can go in two pay grades higher than any other enlistee because of the rank he's achieved.
