Sheridan VA Launches Pilot Foster Program

The Veterans Affairs Hospital in Sheridan is starting a new initiative place adult veterans in foster care in lieu of nursing homes and hospitals. Public Affairs director at the VA, Jackie VanMark, explains what kind of person might benefit from the program.

State legislators recently clarified laws that enabled this program to get off the ground. Van Mark said the program aims to have three or four veterans assigned to a home with a long-term caretaker who lives in the home with them and provides daily care. The program will start with two to three homes that will house between six and eight patients total. Depending on how the program goes, it may expand to other VA programs within the country. country.

There's a similar foster program starting up at the VA in Cheyenne for vets with medical disabilities. Sheridan's foster program will focus primarily on veterans with mental disabilities, such as depression of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
