Teachers, principals and parents all helped take students in Sheridan's five elementary schools to the top in last year's statewide proficiency assessment tests administered under the federal No Child left Behind act.

Coffeen Elementary has been recognized as a 2013 Wyoming Blue Ribbon School based on the significant achievement of its students, but the remaining five schools were also honored by Sheridan County School District 2 trustees earlier this week.

District 2 Director of Elementary Education Scott Stults said students of all five schools – Meadowlark, Highland Park, Woodland Park, Sagebrush and Coffeen – scored significantly above statewide averages in reading and math.

Stults talked about the significance of the Sheridan schools' results in the statewide Proficiency Assessments for Wyoming Students, known as PAWS.

Stults said studies show the number one factor contributing to student success is classroom teaching, followed by the school principal, then the support of parents. He said those three factors are the recipe for student success.

Tests are administered each year to students in the third, fourth and fifth grades. The break-down is as follows.
