The tragedy in Japan hits close to home for Sheridan resident Iku Bennett.

It was a week ago today when the massive magnitude 9.0 earthquake and ensuing tsunami hit Japan, causing widespread devastation. For one Sheridan resident, the effects of the tragedy were close to home. Sheridan Media's Ron Richter has the story.

Iku Bennett moved to the United States from Japan when she was almost 23-years-old. The news of the tragedy no doubt was a lot to handle for Bennett, even considering her loved ones were out of harms way.

Bennett says that she is doing all that she can to try and help the people of the country where she was born and raised.

One of the toughest things for Iku throughout this terrible tragedy is being almost 6,000 miles away from home.

Bennett said that all of the donations that she receives at Ole's will go directly to the American Red Cross to help in the relief effort in Japan.
