Sheridan Memorial Hospital was unaffected by last Friday's internet and telephone outage - but it wasn't by chance or by luck. Chief Information Officer for the hospital, Nyle Morgan, explains.

In the telecom field, having multiple routes for fiber cables to travel is called redundancy. This ensures that if there is a damaged or severed fiber, another path can be used or routed to.

Last Friday, when a contractor ran an auger through a 24-pack of fiber between Buffalo and Sheridan, it was a type of situation the hospital had already prepared for.

Morgan emphasizes that this type of regional telecom outage would not disrupt patient care at the hospital.
