The Sheridan Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees Wednesday were updated on a setback of sorts regarding the 15,000 square foot Cancer Center expansion. Recently, KWN Construction, who's designing the Cancer Center, informed the Hospital that a geotechnical report showed that the proposed site has some expansive and potentially unstable soils.

Hospital CEO Mike McCafferty says that they are remaining optimistic that the news doesn't set them back too much.

Plans are to build the new facility over the top of the existing Welch Cancer Center.

As far as why the soil wasn't tested earlier in the process, it actually was, just not in that exact location says Hospital Facilities Services Manager Rob Forister.

McCafferty indicated that dealing with bad soil isn't something that came as a big surprise.

Hospital officials plan to meet with the engineer that performed the geotechnical report soon to determine what needs to be done to make the project work.

The Hospital expects to have a guaranteed maximum price for the project by May 20th, which will include any additional costs that may be added to fix the soil issue.
