Wyoming Senator Mike Enzi issued a statement Wednesday in response to President Obama's proposals to make sweeping gun control legislation. Sheridan Media's Chris Foy reports.
If this proposed legislation succeeds, these would be the broadest restrictions in decades.
There may be no quick or easy fixes to high-profile acts of violence, said Senator Enzi, but any proposals aimed at protecting our citizens must still protect our Constitutional rights.
He said that here in Wyoming, guns are a part of our way of life and they're a part of growing up and learning responsibility. While some say guns are for hunting or sport, Enzi says they're also used for defense and to prevent further violence.
But federal gun rights restrictions are not guaranteed to stop violence, he said, and we know they would create a host of other problems - even Constitutional problems.
Senator Enzi said people owning guns and shooting guns is not the problem, but rather is violence and its cause. He said we as a country need to continue to seek solutions, but that we shouldn’t let fear drive us down the road of giving up more and more of our most important and basic freedoms.
