Sen. Barrasso: "Filibuster is Critically Important"

U.S. Senator John Barrasso, of Casper, spoke on the floor of the U.S. Senate Wednesday about Majority Leader Harry Reid’s plan to drastically limit the use of the filibuster. In his speech, Barrasso said Barack Obama has even spoke of the importance of the filibuster.

The effectiveness of the filibuster was demonstrated in the 1939 film, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" - but Barrasso said its history goes back to the
Founding Fathers.

If Reid's plan to alter the rules of the Senate succeed, Barrasso made some predictions about what the American people can expect.

Barrasso, also a practicing orthopedic surgeon in Casper, said the rules of the Senate - including the filibuster - ensure a balanced approach to debating certain matters.
