Whether there have been more search and rescue operations this year or just more attention drawn to the issue in the news, the Sheridan County Sheriff's Office and Sheridan County Search and Rescue teams have been busy so far this year.
SCSO Lt. Mark Conrad says that there haven't necessarily been a greater number of incidents but he has heard a lot of people asking the question.
Of the 19 incidents in 2011, they were not all snowmobile searches, but the majority of searches are for overdue hunters in the fall or overdue snowmobilers in the winter. There was one snowmobiling fatality on February 25 in the Big Horns, but that was in Big Horn County. Conrad said the last time there was a snowmobiling fatality in Sheridan County was two years ago.
