Sheridan County School District 2 board of trustees met for their regular meeting Tuesday evening, working through a lengthy agenda.
District Human Resources Coordinator Cody Sinclair recommended six policies to the board on first reading, among those were policies KIB and KIB-E, setting forth guidelines for schools in dealing with Sex Offenders on School Property and Access to School Property by Sex Offenders.
Sinclair explains that the new policies come from new statutes, but simply put in writing what the district already practices.
Currently, though not in policy, decisions are left up to the individual school as to who is and is not allowed on school grounds. New policies give the power to the superintendent.
Along with providing where sex offender information can be found, policy KIB states that registered sex offenders are not allowed on school grounds without approval from the superintendent through a form set forth in Policy KIB-E. The form must be filled out by the registered sex offender three days prior to him/her being allowed on school property. It provides information such as why the person is visiting the school district and whether or not the visit is work-related.
Staff at each school receive an updated sex offender list from the Sheridan County Sheriff's Office each year. The policies will undergo another reading at the board's next meeting in May.
The district also accepted a donation from the Sheridan Rotary Club for $1,000 to be used for food and clothing to students on the free and reduced lunch program. Look for more on that later.
