At Monday's meeting of the Sheridan County School District No. 2 Board of Trustees, the board approved the first reading of a policy that regulates the use of social media both inside and outside the classroom.
Superintendent Craig Dougherty explains.
The policy states that all staff must maintain professionalism at all times while using social media and restricts informal or social contact with students.
Trustee Jim Perkins was the lone dissenting vote on the policy, saying it was too limiting of positive communication with students.
Dougherty says social media can be an extension of the classroom at all times - and can be a positive learning experience - but that the district's legal team recommended having some protection from inappropriate communication with students.
Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Human Resources Terry Burgess said there was an incident where a teacher was involved in some inappropriate online communication.
Ultimately, the first reading of the policy was approved by the board.
