Even though today's weather is still a bit winter-like, word from the Montana Fish & Wildlife is that reservations for twenty Montana State Park camping locations will be opening up in just a couple weeks.

Reservations never used to be in effect, but because of growing numbers throughout the system, users had requested a reservation system be established.

Bob Peterson is the Park Manager for both the Tongue River and Rosebud Battlefield State Parks. He comments.

The system has been set up through Reserve America, and Peterson says folks can reserve their campsites up to nine months before camping.

To say the numbers have grown would be an understatement. Peterson says that summer usage at Tongue River State Park is over 100,000, and one Memorial Weekend, he says, they had 12,000 visitors.

As for the cost of camping, fees have gone up some, he says.

The Park Passport is $25 for the first vehicle, and $20 for a second car. For visitors who don't stay the night, the Park Passport can be used toward the $5 Daily Fee. Passes are available at the Sheridan K-Mart or at the Tongue River Marina.

Many upgrades have been made to the area, Peterson tells us, and rather than being like the old days of people going out there and partying and trashing the place, it has become a family-friendly destination to teach kids how to fish and boat.
