Four hundred by June 2012. That is the goal of the Suicide Prevention Coalition of Johnson County for those to be trained in the QPR Program. Aaron Palmer has more.
QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer. It is a program designed for the everyday person to learn to recognize when someone may be contemplating suicide and then to know what to do to get them help to prevent a tragedy.
Haley Drake, with Northern Wyoming Mental Health and the Suicide Prevention Coalition, said suicide is on the rise everywhere, including Johnson County and the rest of Northeast Wyoming.
In addition to the trained persons in the community, the SPC has a 24/7 suicide Hotline manned by a licensed therapist to help in a crisis situation.
Drake said those that may be interested in learning the program do not have to be professional counselors or even know how to counsel people.
The one-time, two-hour classes for January will take place on Thursday, January 13th from 10 am to noon and again Tuesday, January 25th from 2 to 4 pm.
