Next week marks the beginning of October, and with it comes the implication of long-awaited seasonal change. The first necessary décor for the upcoming fall celebrations is a home-grown pumpkin. Vicki Koltiska, co-owner of the Koltiska Pumpkin Patch, said she was worried the cruel summer would impede this year's harvest.

Indeed, the field is sporting a handsome crop. Most are round and orange, but there is a solid population of genetic outliers representing an interesting spectrum of fall colors and unpredictable shapes that seem to promise interesting jack-o-lantern potential. Visitors to the pumpkin patch catch a hay ride/shuttle to the patch and then take their time hunting through the vines to find the exact size and shape of pumpkin that suits their style. Once they've made their tough decision, they hitch a ride back to the ranch house to visit some farm animals and enter the free weight and seed-guessing contest.

The Patch will be open weekday afternoons from 3 to 6 o'clock and weekends from noon to 6 until October 7. To get there, follow East 5th street past the Game and Fish office and follow the signs. The Koltiska Pumpkin Patch is approximately 6 miles out of town.
