Prescription drug abuse continues to escalate in the United States, as statistics show that nearly 60 percent of drug overdoses in the U.S. are the result of prescription drug abuse. Another alarming statistic is that everyday in the U.S., 2,500 youth ages 12 to 17 abuse a prescription pain reliever for the first time.
In response to the issue, law enforcement agencies nationwide have been hosting prescription drug take back events over the past several years. Evidence Technician Kris Walker with the Sheridan Police Department says that this Saturday people will have the chance to get rid of their unused prescription medication.
Walker says that there is also a drop box at the Police Department for citizens to dispose of their prescription medication.
The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day in Sheridan will be held this Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm in the Walgreens parking lot.
