For the past three years, the Wyoming High School Athletic Association has held the Wyoming State High School Football Championships at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie.
Before that time, the highest seed in each class championship game was host.
WHSAA officials have worked with the UW Athletic Department to make War Memorial the permanent future of the championships. This past February, the WHSAA board accepted a new three-year bid from UW over a two-year bid from Sheridan.
Sheridan's bid would have provided a bigger per-year financial incentive to the WHSAA than UW's bid will. WHSAA officials hoped a bigger draw to Laramie's facilities would compensate for that.
The WHSAA claimed its decision wasn't based as much on financial gain as it was on its desire to provide the best experience for players. High school teams get a chance to compete on the biggest stage, playing at War Memorial, and the decision by WHSAA officials was said to be based largely on the fact that no high school venue in Wyoming could compete with the college's facilities.
