Pedestrian Killed in Hit & Run

Pedestrian Killed in Hit & Run

A tragic incident occurred just south of Cheyenne January 25th on US Highway 85. Sgt. Stephen Townsend with the Wyoming Highway Patrol issued a report Thursday indicating that a pedestrian who was walking on the highway had been struck by a vehicle. Sgt. Townsend tells us this is a unique situation.

The report indicates that after impact, Vasquez-Cruz came to rest in the southbound driving lane. Another vehicle came upon the scene and turned around and parked facing north on the southbound side of the roadway with their headlights still on.

The occupants of the vehicle were in the process of going to check on Vasquez-Cruz when another southbound vehicle, blinded by the parked vehicle's headlights, failed to see Vasquez-Cruz lying in the roadway and struck him. The driver of that vehicle did stop at the scene and is cooperating with Troopers.

The victim was 27-year-old Margarito Vasquez-Cruz, an illegal immigrant who had no identification on his person. Highway Patrol was unable to determine who he was until his girlfriend, who lives in Cheyenne, phoned in a missing persons report on January 26th.

A true mystery, Sgt. Townsend tells us where investigators go from here.

Troopers are investigating alcohol as a contributing factor as to why Vasquez-Cruz may have been walking in the roadway. The Laramie County Coroner has determined that the first impact from the hit and run vehicle caused the fatal injuries to Vasquez-Cruz.
